The aim of the Australian designers of the XB iteration of the Ford Falcon was to give the model a more aggressive style, partly incorporating the DNA of the Ford Mustang, a model that at that time was not being commercialised in Australia.
The most obvious changes could be seen at the front, with a new, more voluminous bonnet, the new design of the split grille with a plastic honeycomb pattern finished in matt black and with the sidelights and turn signals now placed below the revised bumpers.
At the rear, the saloon incorporated larger wrap-around tail lights and the bumper was slightly modified. The most admired version of this line was the GT. Available with four-door and coupe bodywork, the Ford Falcon XB GT was powered by an American 351 cu in Cleveland V8 engine that – fed by a four-barrel Holley 750 carburettor – delivered 300 hp. The standard engine was connected to a four-speed manual gearbox, but it could optionally be coupled to the three-speed FMX automatic gearbox.
The standard axle ratios were 3:1 for manual transmission and 2.75:1 for automatic, although these ratios could optionally be inverted. The brake discs on all four wheels were servo-assisted and turbo-cooled. Inside, the complete set of instruments included a speedometer reading to 140 mph (225 km/h) and a tachometer to 8,000 rpm, combined with dials indicating temperature, fuel level, ammeter and oil pressure, as well as an electric clock. The steering wheel was three-spoke and the front seats were reclining.
A series of accessories could be customised in the Ford Falcon GT such as a sunroof, electric windows, a vinyl roof and a radio-cassette sound system. The exterior reflected the model’s sporty styling with exclusive colours, bumpers matching the bodywork, a ‘GT351’ badge on the wings, details in matt black that contrasted with the predominant colour, and twin exhausts. The front featured quartz-iodine fog lamps and the model was identified by a red GT badge in the bottom-left section of the grille.
The Ford Falcon XB line’s GT was the swan song for the most powerful version of the Australian Falcon. The initials would return in 1992 with the EB GT to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the GT.
